The temptation to slap himself senseless might provide a momentary distraction for a little while…Ī sudden movement from the front of the class startled him into whipping his head around, but thankfully it was just Ed holding up a page full of doodles up to the fluorescent lights reverently. Eddy swore that the minute hand on the wall clock hadn’t moved an inch ever since he’d started watching it ten minutes ago. And yet, something about today seemed different than the rest of the days – aside from the fact that things seemed to be progressing even slower than usual, that is. The hours seemed to crawl at an abysmally torpid pace, a complaint that Eddy was more than unhappy to remark, like clockwork, every hour of every class of every day of the entire school year. “Not to mention the rest of the day,” Ed added slyly, causing the duo burst into a subdued gigglefit behind the backs of their hands as they followed their short ringleader.
“Perhaps if he’d establish a habitual sleep cycle, Eddy wouldn’t be quite so irritable in the early morning hours.” “Er, yes, well put, Ed,” he gingerly wrapped an arm around his friend’s torso, carefully attempting to walk the line between sympathetic concern and trying not to upset his deep-seated aversion to filth. “It’s not like Eddy to be so concerned with tardiness.” “Goodness,” Edd put his hands up to his face, glancing back to see Ed get back up on his feet, completely unfazed by the encounter despite his broad face having been cut up into literal pieces to match the fence’s sharp metallic pattern, yet still somehow retaining the shape of its usual model. “C’mon, we’re gonna be late,” with that, he stuffed his hands deep into his pockets and stomped away, slouching grumpily. “Shut it, Ed,” Eddy snarled as he shoved the big lummox aside, knocking him through the bushes and into the chain-link fence at the park’s entrance. “Wakey wakey!” he hollered, and proceeded to poke his pal in the stomach playfully.

… And without warning, the view promptly replaced with an extreme close-up of Ed’s face, unpleasantly jarring Eddy back to reality with its yellow speckled skin and curiously wide-set eyes, framed by a generously thick and singular eyebrow that seemed to perpetually float over its owner’s furrowed forehead. In fact, the only thing Edd had done was turn around and happily greet Eddy as he came to meet his friends at the park so they could all walk to school together, his thin outline bathing in the dappled mellow aura filtering down from the trees on this gloriously vibrant fall morning… It certainly wasn’t Ed’s smell, or else Edd would be the one who was reeling – no, it had to be something else, some strange, mysterious force that had suddenly crept up on him and (figuratively) smacked him senseless. It had started with his vision, then it spread hotly through his veins, bubbling into his gut and burning his esophagus from end to end – although he couldn’t rule out his mom’s cooking on that last account. All he knew was that he was standing in the middle of the street – frozen mid-step, bug-eyed, slightly slackjawed – all because something had somehow sent his senses buzzing.
Truthfully, Eddy wasn’t sure one way or the other. Also, I’d like to thank doubledyke for partially inspiring the premise of this story. Note: This is set in the months immediately following the events of Big Picture Show. Meanwhile, the rematch of the century returns to the fields of Peach Creek Junior High. Summary: A sudden moment of clarity causes a struggle for Eddy as he tries to make sense of it all.
